Melissa O'Neil and Eric Winter discuss filming the proposal and the devastating twist immediately after.
What will the Chenford wedding look like in The Rookie Season 9? Well, if you ask the stars, they're hoping for something a lot calmer than what happened after Tim (Eric Winter) proposed to Lucy (Melissa O'Neil) in the Season 8 finale.
"I hope peaceful and uneventful," O'Neil immediately told TV Insider on the Disney Upfront carpet on Tuesday, May 12. And when Lisseth Chavez chimed in with "safe," she agreed.
"I have this theory that if we were true to what's going on with them, that they might like to keep it very, very private in order to ensure that nobody else gets stabbed or kidnapped," O'Neil continued, but was quick to add, "But it is The Rookie, and I feel like it would be special to celebrate together."
Mekia Cox shared that sentiment, pointing out, "We've got to celebrate the two of you. It's kind of a big deal. I think the entire crew would want to celebrate Chenford."
O'Neil then joked, "It'll be at the station."
As for the groom, "I think Tim is the type of guy that would probably elope, to be honest. I think he would do something small and sneak out and not do a big production, but I don't know," Winter said. "That's going to be interesting to see how that sort of settles. Will it be a Bailey [Jenna Dewan] and Nolan [Nathan Fillion] type thing, or will it be more intimate?"
First, however, they have to get out of the situation they're in, which is that both have been kidnapped by Everett's (Jeffrey Vincent Parise) people just after Lucy said yes. That meant that filming that big moment for Chenford was "wild," according to O'Neil.
"We were waiting for the light, and to wait for the light means you're sitting around all day, and then suddenly everyone's yelling at you and telling you to get to your marks and everything," she explained. "But we had a blast. It was beautiful, it was very romantic and it was also devastating. It's sad to be in the throes of premarital bliss and then suddenly sand is in your mouth, and you're passing out. So I really hope I wake up and that I remember that I have skills, that I remember that I have a fiancé. Who knows? Maybe she forgets."
Winter was glad to have Bill Roe, their director and producer, there, sharing, "He had some great, clever ideas to make it feel extremely unique and not typical in any way. I think the surprise at the end says it all. That was quite the twist."
He also has a suggestion for what we could see from Tim and Lucy when Season 9 begins.
"I have no clue how we start, but I do feel there's a world in which they should show up in separate locations. I don't think they should be kidnapped in the same place. I think that'll increase the stakes. It will be incredibly dramatic," he said. "What happened to each person? How do I get out? Whereas if we're together, then there's going to be teamwork. Obviously, people are going to come in and help us out. Hopefully, Tim doesn't die. I don't know."
