From offers they can't refuse to sleeping with the fishes, from going to the mattresses to horses heads in people's beds, The Godfather's impact upon modern culture is immense. And it's a pretty stunning movie too. Marlon Brando towering mumbly turn as the ageing all-powerful don of the Corleone mafia family is hypnotic, but he's matched by Al Pacino as his tormented son Michael, determined to leave the family business behind, but dragged back into the crime world by bonds of honour and obligation as strong as steel.
Factor in a supporting cast that includes Robert Duval, Diane Keaton, Talia Shore, John Cazale and James Caan, an absolutely timeless score and direction by Francis Ford Coppola that elevates the blood and guts to the level of operatic tragedy and you have one of the greatest movies of the 20th century. No wonder it picked up the Best Picture Oscar and the sequel, Part II - also a Best Picture winner - is even better.
If you're curious about the story behind its making seek out drama series The Offer, in which Brando is played by Grey's Anatomy's Justin Chambers. (175 minutes)
