Halcyon Steel Orchestra will host a Blockorama this Saturday in celebration of its 55th anniversary, a milestone which was marked earlier this week on May 5th.
This year's Blockorama will bring together eight of the country's top steel orchestras in Antigua and Barbuda, including Hells Gate Steel Orchestra and Panache, along with the Royal Police Force Marching Band.
The event will also feature a game of Bingo.
Public Relations Officer (PRO) Laukland "Poonchin" Joseph says this year's staging is significant as it marks the return of the event in this format after a long break.
"Not the first time we would have had it, but the first time in a long while -- it's a celebration," Joseph said.
He added audiences can expect a high-energy showcase of steelpan music featuring some of the leading orchestras in the country.
"When you put eight of the top steel bands competing in one location, including Hells Gate, Panache, Pandemonium, Original West Side, Gemonites, Ebonites and multiple champions... it's something that any pan or music lover should not miss," Joseph said.
The PRO says the event also continues to play an important cultural role, particularly in encouraging youth participation in steelband music.
"The pan is a very safe place for young people to really harness their talent and be more productively engaged," he said.
The signature celebration begins at 7 p.m. on Saturday at Sir Keithley Shepherd Recreation Park, formerly King George V Grounds. While Admission to the event is free, Bingo cards cost $5 each.
Joseph expressed gratitude to sponsors who made free admission possible. Among others, they include APUA INET, ACP RadioShack, Stonewall and several others.
He also expressed gratitude to media platforms for advertising their event.
