Recent thriller The Running Man has been added to Prime Video for subscribers. While it was only released in cinemas late last year, the Glen Powell dystopian actioner has surprise landed on the streamer today for free.
Given it is a Paramount movie, fans may have expected it to stream on Paramount+ first like the US, though it appears that they have opted for Prime Video as a first window for UK viewers.
Adapted from Stephen King's 1982 novel, which was previously turned into an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie, The Running Man is set in an authoritarian future where competitors on the eponymous game show attempt to outrun assassins for 30 days.
Powell's character Ben Richards enters the show as a last resort to help save his sick daughter, though quickly becomes a fan favourite, which threatens the whole system.
"[Director Edgar] Wright's Running Man is a lively, satirical stab at modern-day reality TV, scary big-brother technology, cultural dissension and rampant income inequality, all slathered in blood-soaked ultraviolence and bonkers charm," added USA Today.
However, not all critics were fans, Time Out labelling it "a movie that got up on the wrong side of the bed and compensated with four quadruple espressos".
"What should, quite easily, feel like a mirror's been smashed and its pieces methodically jammed between our ribs, feels closer to a friendly knock on the shoulder. The material's all there, yet there's none of the urgency," added The Independent.
