People gathered at Detroit Shipping Co. in Midtown Detroit for a Lunar New Year Neighborhood Celebration on Saturday, Feb. 28.
The celebration at the restaurant on Peterboro Street and other businesses in the historic Chinatown Detroit district, where a $2.4 million upgrade is coming soon, included Qigong, an ancient Chinese mind-body practice; a DJ; an artesian market; a Lion Dance performance; and more.
"It is more than a single event -- it honors both the longstanding Asian and Asian-American communities rooted in our neighborhood and the growing community shaping its future, while creating a welcoming place for people of all backgrounds to gather, learn, and celebrate together," Julie Sailus, the arts and culture programming director at Detroit Shipping Co., said in a statement to the Free Press.
"For Detroit Shipping Co., these efforts reinforce our role as a cultural hub that supports artists, small businesses, and community storytelling. For the broader community, they create visibility, shared experiences, and meaningful opportunities to celebrate heritage and build lasting connections."
The Year of the Horse began on Feb. 17, kicking off weeks of celebration in Detroit and around the world.
