Amanda described the moment as chaotic and funny, saying it reflected their history of bad luck
A couple's surprise dinnertime engagement on a cruise ship went haywire when the wait staff spoiled the big reveal before the proposal.
Amanda Bratton, 46, was shocked when the waiters began singing "happy engagement" to the tune of "Happy Birthday to You" while she was having dinner with her partner, Gary, 43.
"I think the wait staff were trying to make it special, but Gary was definitely surprised," Amanda told news agency SWNS of the singing and the slice of vanilla cake with a candle in it that the waiters brought out.
She tried to laugh off the encounter, which happened a few years ago.
Amanda then whispered to everyone near her, ""I'm not engaged."
Gary had bought a ring from a jeweler on the cruise ship, with the plan to have it delivered to the table before he got down on one knee.
After the waiters awkwardly finished the song, Gary adjusted his plans and proposed to Amanda right away. She said yes.
"Instead of being special and romantic, it was chaotic and all wrong," Amanda said. "I was so confused and couldn't help but just laugh."
