The acclaimed Dark Knight actor isn't afraid to say the quiet part out loud.
Christian Bale loves you, and you love Christian Bale, but a line does exist -- or at least it's supposed to -- for the famed The Dark Knight and upcoming The Bride! actor. What Bale finds himself navigating, nowadays and on a daily basis, is no different than any other well-known Hollywood actor, and it's especially true of the more acclaimed ones who can often be a victim of their own celebrity.
Yeah, I get it, some of you will read this and roll your eyes while simultaneously muttering, "poor famous rich guy!" under your breath as you piece together this month's household budget, but there's definitely something to be said for Bale's (and other's) right to privacy and to not be paparazzi'd into oblivion; or to be held to an expectation that he's actually, in real life, the same character people see onscreen.

Speaking about his new movie, The Bride! -- a refreshing (but divisive) take on the story of the Bride of Frankenstein that co-stars Jessie Buckley -- Bale got candid with CBR's Grae Drake after the Academy Award-winner was posed an interesting question about interacting with his fans.
Don't Expect Christian Bale to Be His Characters
Bale says that, for starters, celebrities aren't perfect.
Grae: "When Frank meets someone that he really admires [in The Bride!], it doesn't go great. But I wondered if you thought about that scene in terms of your fans meeting you."
Bale: "It's always a disappointment. You should never meet people. No, really! I think that it's inhuman to expect people to be able to live up to any of those expectations. Movies are magical. They're wonderful. Leave it at that, you know? Because a movie is incredible doesn't mean that the people that make them are incredible all the time."
He makes a valid point that is impossible to argue against, unless you truly do believe he either swings around New York City beating up criminals at night or that he's a serial killing psychopath that flexes his muscles while having sex with his next murder victim. And, spoiler alert, he's also not Frankenstein.
Christian Bale, The Bride! and The Problem With 'Obsession'
"I do think that there's a kind of an obsession, which I do believe began in America, of heroes and villains," Bale explained. "And you cannot waver from that. If you're a hero, you must be a hero your entire life, which is impossible. And therefore inevitably disappoints. And thinking that everybody's a villain. People don't walk around like Charles Manson, with a swastika carved into the forehead. They don't announce themselves. But they do very villainous things."
In Bale's opinion, everyone, including celebrities, should be viewed as human, and nothing more, or less: "I tend to think people do heroic things, right? Rather than being heroes. They do villainous things rather than being villains, right? There are whole other aspects to them, you know, as well. But we don't like that in culture. We like to be a bit more black and white, and that's just not. It's a lie."
You can stop muttering now, seeing as you likely do agree with what Bale is saying. Celebrities are entertainers, not gods. It just so happens Bale is so exceptional in his roles that he, and others of his caliber, can make us all forget -- for a couple of hours -- that they're anything other than what we're seeing.
